Special Grant Challenges

Inspiring the next big idea to help people in southwestern Pennsylvania

Why Challenges?
The late Henry L. Hillman believed in thinking beyond the familiar in order to make life better for people in southwestern Pennsylvania. Building bridges between Pittsburgh’s rich history of innovation and new ideas from around the world could only make our region stronger and more connected.

That spirit informs the way the foundations affiliated with the Hillman family approach problem-solving today. Competition challenges, like the ones shown below, are a way to provide a spark for people to think beyond traditional means to tackle big issues. These challenges have been the stimuli to try new models, form new partnerships, and encourage out-of-the-box thinking to find the next big idea to improve lives.
